I have no answer to this question.
But I can give an example of a national hero who was and is despised
By nations against whom he fought.
I mean Napoleon. He fought numerous wars, as a result of which thousands died.
The French, the Jews and possibly others think highly of him,
but in England he is compared to Hitler.
