AI grew up in a household headed by a holocaust survivor, my father
Gil Carl AlRoy (original name: Carl Schmatnik born:1924 in Czernowitz
died:1985). His mother lived with us as well (Etel Bley Schmatnik
born:1902 in Sadagora, died:1989). My father lived in Israel with his
parents and fought to liberate the Jewish state.
The family changed their name from Schmatnik to AlRoy.

Nana Esther sat in her room at night drinking vodka and I would sneak
out of bed and sit up late with her, eating forbidden candies she
would sneak to me and listening to her stories of growing up as a
refugee during the pogroms of 1919 and living through WW2 in
Czernowitz, as a frizer with her husband Samuel Schmatnik and son
Carl. Summers at the Black Sea, living in the Jewish Ghetto, in
hiding, and finally in Israel. I named my daughter Emilia Bley AlRoy
after her.

All of my grandparents are from Bukovina, in Czernowitz or Sadagora,
on the Bley/Blei side: Salomon Selig Blei/Bley & Gusta Sandberg were
Nana Esther's parents, and her siblings are Aron, Regina, Mina and
Alter Bley/Blei. NOTE: I'm in search of Regina Blei's daughter Henya,
who may have survived.

On the Schmatnik side: Ioil Schmatnick and Rosa Engler were
Grandfather Samuel's parents, and his siblings were Rifka, Jenny,
Judah, Lotti, Mini and Adolf.

I live in San Francisco, California. I'm very interested to visit Czernowitz!

I have been researching and writing about my family on my blog:

Thank you all,
Iris AlRoy
