Greetings,
I'm new to this list. Thank you for all the resources.
I'm found this list when researching the WW2 history of Czernowitz as
my father was born there in 1924 (and his parents born in Sadagora).
My father (Carl Schmatnik) was imprisoned and escaped from several
camps including Doaga. His parents (Etel Blei Schmatnic and Samuel
Schmatnik) had a barber business in town, and were living in the
Czernowitz Jewish ghetto during the war, eventually all emigrating to
Haifa, where they changed their name to AlRoy. My dad eventually came
to the US, where he became a teacher and writer on Arab/Jew relations.
He died when I was 19, and I have no known relatives in Czernowitz
still, though I am in search of a cousin who may have survived.
My father's story was published in 1961 and you can read it on my
blog, where I am researching and continuing to blog about my family's
history.

There are many, many details missing. He never spoke of all this,
except when I was a child he would rage and cry and tell me shocking
details now and then of his wartime life.
I hope to visit Czernowitz eventually (I live in San Francisco, CA).
Thank you for all the good information!
