I think that well until the very early 40's Yiddish was not viewed with de=
feat. or shame. Yiddish was a verbal tradition that came with a feeling of=
belonging to a family and other Jews. It was the easy roundup by the Nazis=
and the absence of fighting that led the Israelis to call it a shameful la=
nguage of defeat. Indeed they were able to break away from it and successfu=
lly championed Hebrew.
I speak German much of it learned at home and later at the University. I =
know enough Yiddish to be able to talk some. For me this Yiddish keeps my O=
mama memories alive. Remembering the dead was extremely important to the or=
thodox.

Subject: [Cz-L] Forget your Yiddish
In Czernowitz Yiddish was the language
Of failure ,destitution.
Therefore on your way up you must drop it.
In our house it was forbidden.
Better broken German than Yiddish,
Hardy
