Memories are important,

But they will slowly fade away;

New generations ,

Nostalgia is no longer what it used to be

I think that well until the very early 40's Yiddish was not viewed with
defeat. or shame. Yiddish was a verbal tradition that came with a feeling
of belonging to a family and other Jews. It was the easy roundup by the
Nazis and the absence of fighting that led the Israelis to call it a
shameful language of defeat. Indeed they were able to break away from it and
successfully championed Hebrew.

 I speak German much of it learned at home and later at the University. I
know enough Yiddish to be able to talk some. For me this Yiddish keeps my
Omama memories alive. Remembering the dead was extremely important to the
orthodox.
