Hi Mimi...sorry to disagree...but the slightly different versions of
Yiddish developed in parallel. The Lithuanian variety is no more classical
than any other Eastern European version! Cornel.

Yiddish is taught and studied at many universities, for instance; Indiana
University
In the US, Oxford in Britain and Vilna in Lithuania.
It is studied for its own linguistic, historic and literary value and also
as
A language which has preserved many ancient words and terms of the German
language
As spoken in the 10th and 11th century.

Lithuanian Yiddish is considered classical Yiddish, but the Yiddish spoken
in different regions,
Varies in the pronunciation of some letters and contains words and
expressions
Borrowed from the local people.
In the Bukovina the borrowed words were mostly of Ukrainian origin, for
instance:
"Bloteh" = mud
"Praznik = holiday, festivity
"Koilich" = Challa bread
"Pastuch = shepherd .
"Pa vollieh = slowly, at leisure.

Whereas in Lithuanian Yiddish the sound "oo" like in mood was rarely used,
In the Bukovina it was used a lot.
The English word "what" in Lithuanian Yiddish is "wos" in the Bukovina we
said "woos".
The English word "say" in Lithuanian Yiddish would be pronounced "zog",
In the Bukovina we said "zoog".
"They said "koom" for "come", we say " kim" pronouncing the "i" like in
"swim".
