Hi Richard,

The term "Valia" in today's "Valia Kuzmyna" comes from the Romanian term "valea", which means valley. Go first to my posting "Census of Romania for the Year 1930: Province of Bucovina by Departments and Districts"

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2014/05/census-of-romania-for-year-1930.html

and download the PDF compilation - including alphabetical index and GPS coordinates - from the census:

http://hauster.de/data/CensusBucovina1930.pdf

In Bukovina we've got Valea-Boului, Valea-Cosminului, Valea-Putnei and Valea-Seaca, BUT only

Valeva, in the Cernauti / Czernowitz Department, today's Valyava, 15 mi. North of Czernowitz

stands alone. Please check the Census of Romania for the Year 1930: Cernauti Department (Jewish Population)

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/p/census-of-romania-for-year-1930.html

and you'll find Valeva with 2,103 inhabitants in 1930, among them 75 Jews (= 3,6 %). During the Austrian period the spelling was "Walawa, Valava"; please check:

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2010/09/bukovina-census-for-years-1869-1880.html

So, my guess is that it's rather Valeva, Walawa, Valava than Valea-Cosminului. I do hope these data will be helpful to you.

Subject: [Cz-L] Valia Kuzmyna

All of the information I've acquired on my maternal great-grandfather says he was born in Czernowitz in the 1860s. A 1905 New York State census lists his birthplace as Austria-Valia. Is it a reasonable inference to conclude that this refers to the village of Valia Kuzmyna just south of Czernowitz proper, or are there other villages in the area with a similar name?
