Dear Ilana,

Thank you for your message and your confidence. In addition to Abraham Kogan's information on this subject, published at our Ehpes Blog

http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=9913

I'd like to draw your attention to the following article on the "Polish Minority" in Romania, edited by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bucharest:

http://www.bukareszt.msz.gov.pl/en/bilateral_coperation/polish_minority/

"After regaining the independence by Poland in 1918, a part of Poles from Bukovina left the Romanian lands. Polish organisations from this territory didn't reach any more, in period between the world wars, such expansiveness like they presented at the turn of the century. After the II World War process of repatriation also included Poles from Bukovina. Taking into consideration general number of 5000 re-emigrants from Romania, two thirds were constituted of Bukovinian families settled on Western Lands, mainly in Zielonogórskie county - Żary and Żagań surroundings."

In my understanding, the Polish citizenship offered also to Jews an opportunity to escape from extremly difficult living conditions in post WWII Soviet Union. The Polish citizenship was decisive too for "Samuel del Campo's Rescue Operation in Czernowitz" as per:

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/2016/06/samuel-del-campos-rescue-operation.html

Therefore, from my point of view, although there are some parallels, it was not a similar repatriation program. Hope, these data will be helpful to you!

Hi Edgar,

I just reread this post and something tweaked my interest. My grandfather, Gustav Gedaly, was deported to Siberia in 1944. My mother and grandmother always told the story that in 1946 they went to Poland because there was a repatriation program for Polish prisoners. They were trying to free him as a Polish citizen. I don't remember which town in Poland they were living in but after a while they were told by the Red Cross that he had died. In fact this was not true. But they left thinking it was only to receive 2 letters from him in 1951 after they had emmigrated to Israel. After that they never heard from him again. Do you think this the same kind of program you are talking about?

I'm always in awe at the level of your knowledge.

Regards,
Ilana
