Hi Edgar,
I just reread this post and something tweaked my interest. My grandfather,
Gustav Gedaly, was deported to Siberia in 1944. My mother and grandmother
always told the story that in 1946 they went to Poland because there was a
repatriation program for Polish prisoners. They were trying to free him as
a Polish citizen. I don't remember which town in Poland they were living in
but after a while they were told by the Red Cross that he had died. In fact
this was not true. But they left thinking it was only to receive 2 letters
from him in 1951 after they had emmigrated to Israel. After that they never
heard from him again. Do you think this the same kind of program you are
talking about?
I'm always in awe at the level of your knowledge.
Regards,
Ilana
