Dear Berti,
Dear Irene,
Thank you both so much for your literally enlightening comments. It's Irene, who brought even more lingt into the darkness by drawing our attention to an article published by "Der Tag" on June 12, 1932, headlined "35 Years of Electricity History in Czernowitz", which I additionally uploaded to our Ehpes Blog:
http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=10249
For those, who don't read (Gothic) German, here are some highlights from this article:
- During the early 1890ies electric light came - experimentally - for the very first time to Czernowitz.
- Shortly afterwards "Hotel Central" got the first traction engine moving an electric light generator.
- In 1895/96 the Czernowitz Electric Power Plant was designed and erected.
- On August 1, 1897 the Czernowitz Electric Tramway commenced operations.
- This was revolutionary in comparison to many Western countries and even to Vienna.
- At the beginning many inhabitants showed restraint towards this "devil's handiwork".
- Hotel Central, Hotel Schwarzer Adler and the City Council were the first electrified buildings in Czernowitz.
- In 1903 the Electric Power Plant got a 250 HP diesel engine, followed by 3 x 500 HP in 1912/13.
- The Electric Power Plant, initially located on Althgasse, was replaced by a new one on Pruthgasse in 1911.
- Finally, in 1931, a new 5000 HP diesel generator set facilitated to connect the suburbs to the power grid.
Well, now - thanks to you - we understand, why Elias Hauster's map from October 1913 didn't show any kerosene lamps for the city center of Czernowitz: Czernowitz was already electrfied since the year 1896! I wonder if my grandfather Elias Hauster, 35 years old in 1913, anticipated the political catastrophe leading to WWI, which began less than one year later? Anyway, Elias Hauster's map remained valid for nearly two decades between 1913 - 1931!
Warmest wishes to you!
Edgar Hauster

Hi Edgar,
I understand that the position of the new lights were planned and also
put on an already existing Municipality map probably by your grand
father or one of his aids. The then already existing lights in the
central parts should be seen also. I wonder how many of the dark
points are lights or added buildings in a certain period.
Anyhow the map tells a part of the story of the town.Very much enjoyed
it. And please check on your next walk how many of the electric poles
are still in the same position and may be of the material used for the
lamps in 1913.
Best from Haifa,
Berti.
