I thought it was a little specious to make a blitz trip to Cz & expect all
doors to immediately to open...perhaps if they'd written ahead through the
Jewish museum or some other venue, things might have been different. Maybe
these people had a sink full of dirty dishes and unmade beds and didn't
want this famous actress to see her former house in that state. I've by now
been several times in Czernowitz, ranging from a few days to several weeks
& have never encountered any hostility from the townspeople. Granted the
first time in 1996 I felt like a stranger in a strange land, in 2008 was
back for the jubilee and in 2013 I was there for close to two months,
rented an apartment and lived daily life there, taught a photo workshop
through the auspices of the Jewish museum, accompanied a two groups of
university students to nearby villages who went to interview elderly people
about the Jews who once lived there. Over time I've made friends and
acquaintances and have felt quite at home. I also coincided two or three
times with the Summer work camp to clear the Jewish cemetery, a wonderful
program of international cooperation!
