Many Jews chose their profession as their name...ie Kraemer (Merchant),
Schlosser(Locksmith) etc. Cornel.

My husband=E2=80=99s family name from Czernowitz was Hite (or Chayet), =
but at some point it was changed to Walt. He believes his grandfather =
was a tailor and the sign was over the door, meaning both tailor and the =
family name. The name change was attributed to his grandfather having =
to serve on a jury where some fascists were convicted and wanting to not =
be so conspicuous, were were told. I did find his grandmother=E2=80=99s =
grave in the cemetery records, hand-written =E2=80=9CWalt=E2=80=9D on =
her headstone. But haven=E2=80=99t found much else in JewishGen in =
terms of family birth, marriage records with that name.

Thanks, Peggy
