I am struggling to understand a particular 'Jewish names' issue.
We have an ancestor who came to the US in 1910, sailing from Rotterdam to
New York on the S.S. Statendam. The "Manifest of Alien Passengers" gives
his name as Leon Rugendorf from Czernowitz and lists Tsulin (sp?) Furmann
of Czernowitz as "nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came."
Later, in his 1943 Petition For Naturalization, he asks that his name be
changed to Morris Forman.
I am assuming that his true surname was something akin to Furmann, but I do
not understand the temporary adoption of "Rugendorf". Any observations
would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Jay
