Oops, that was supposed to be "bangs" head. But you get the
idea..Çernaut,i was a city in Romania. Czernowitz was a city in the
Habsburg Empire.

Incidentally, I shared with one of my father's elderly cousins in Israel
the piece that Ossi sent on “Seine Muttersprache war das habsburgische
Deutsch der Juden aus Czernowitz”( His mother tongue was the Habsburg
German of the Jews from Czernowitz), and she said it took her back to
the old days and places: the Pruth, the summer air, her parents' house.
She added that she had recently seen a former actor in a television
broadcast, who said: "Czernowitzer werden nicht mehr geboren,Czrnowitzer
sterben nur"--Czernowitzers aren't born anymore, they only die.

Too true. But this group keeps the place alive, also for all of us
adoptive or would-be Czernowitzers who have never been there.
