Hi Edgar,
thank you for this announcement. I was writing about this album for
the list yesterday, but did not have time to finish, so I'll just add
a shorter version of my post to your thread.
"CZERNOWITZ. KUNSTALBUM", a new book by Sergij Osatschuk, an academic
and civic leader, and Tetyana Dugaeva, an art historian and former
director of the Chernivtsi Museum of Art, is a veritable encyclopedia
of artistic depictions of Czernowitz over the last two centuries. From
classicist rigor of 19-th century masters to post-postmodernist
sensibilities of contemporary creators, this unprecedented collection
of more than 300 full-page full-color reproductions of works by 120
artists serves as a representative sample of the entire Czernowitz
oeuvre in the fine arts. The book itself is an excellent metaphor for
the world we call "Czernowitz", where under a single cover Imperial
and Royal cavalry officers freely mingle with Hasidic peddlers,
brightly colored garb of Ukrainian peasants smartly contrasts with
black suites and hats of Vienna-educated lawyers, and secessionist
decorations on sophisticated facades of Austrian banks seamlessly
morph into industrial style of Soviet implants. Both Sergij Osatschuk
and Tetyana Dugaeva are well respected for their prior multiple and
significant contributions to scholarship and popularization of
Czernowitz history and culture, and they deserve the highest praise
for this collection. The album is bound to find its way to many book
shelves and coffee tables around the world, and people who would like
to visit Czernowitz more frequently than they can, would now be able
to take a virtual walk in space and time by leafing through its pages.
The first printing of 1000 copies is not likely to satisfy the demand,
so it may be a good idea to get the album before it is sold out.
The publisher's site displays about 20 sample pages
