My name is Rick Held and my father Berthold Alexander came from Czernowitz. He migrated to Australia with his parents in 1948.
I am a screenwriter, and now I am writing my first novel. It is a work of fiction based on a passage in my father’s memoirs, which he hand wrote when he was 71. He passed at 80.
The passage tells his extraordinary story - one, of course, of many - of how he survived under the Nazis. He does not record much on the specifics of his family’s release from the ghetto, i.e. the Popovici factor, but they were indeed among those fortunates who were allowed to return to their homes, thanks to him.
To accurately fill out the details of my novel I would dearly love to be able to ask questions about daily life in Czernowitz. Thanks to help from Prof Kwiet at the Sydney Jewish Museum, and his introducing me to the remarkable Maurice Linker, several have already been answered. But in the coming months I will no doubt have many more that they have not been able to help me with.
If any of you are able and willing to help, please let me know. The blog site you have all created is a truly special project and I am very grateful for it.
