Dear Boaz,

The name change for my grandfather from Elias Silber to Elias Hauster happened in 1898 when he enrolled at the Technical University in Vienna. I've posted his certificate of enrollment at our Ehpes Blog

http://ehpes.com/blog1/?p=10612

displaying the following note by the dean in the upper left corner: "Name change from Silber to Hauster effected in accordance with margin number 175 2/3 [?] by the rectorate of the Imperial and Royal Technical University". As a matter of fact this was a change from the maternal family name (Chane Jente Silber) to the paternal one (Isak Hauster, initially Hausthor). Still, according to the Austrian laws and notwithstanding the name change, Elias was illegitimate in 1898, since his parents Isak and Chane Jente had their civil marriage, at an advanced age, only in 1902; no doubt about, per Jewish rite, their were married for decades earlier.

A similar situation, dear Boaz, may apply for your great-grandfather too?! Just my two cents...! Warmest wishes!

Edgar Hauster

Subject: [Cz-L] Question regarding surname change

--00000000000008fd3405768db704

Hello listserve,

My great-grandfather was originally named Isaac Ravitz (Rawitz) and was a
rabbi/teacher in Rabbi Friedman's court in Sadagora, Bukovina. Around
WW1, he moved with the his family, along with Rabbi Friedman, to Vienna
Austria. At the time, he changed the surname from "Ravitz" to
"Weintraub". I'm wondering if the surname change was a common practice to
integrate better in Vienna, Austria (or even in Bukovina where the surname
is not uncommon).

On a sidneote, I enjoy this listserve and the valuable information it
provides.

Boaz Weintraub
