Dear Mr. Ross,
Thank you for writing the detailed letter about your visit to Czernowitz. I
hurry to send you this e-message because of my unique qualification: I
personally knew and remember Leon Kopelmann, your great- uncle, though our
encounter occurred seventy-eight years ago.
The Red Army had marched into Czernowitz in June 1940 and in the Fall I entered
the seventh grade of Middle School No.16, the former Romanian Women's Lyceum
Elena Doamna. Leon Kopelmann was our instructor in drafting. It was a difficult
time for both of us: the language of instruction was Ukrainian, which we had
then mastered only to a limited extent. But I was impressed by the instructional
skill of the instructor, especially the use of colored crayons and
three-dimensional representations. I did not know at that time that Kopelmann was
a painter who had received his art education at famous academies in Italy and
Romania.
The excellent lectures of Kopelmann were an asset many years later when I
studied Chemical Engineering in New York. Regrettably, I have not seen any of
Kopelmann's painting.

Regards,

Alfred Schneider
