Dear friends from Czernowitz,
This is very interesting as it it relates to my second great aunt, Helena R=
otenberg from Tarnobzreg in Galicia who married Karl Eiser from Chernovitz=
. I could never account for how the two would have met or been introduced g=
iven the 500km distance. To further complicate things they lived in Budapes=
t before immigrating to NYC in 1900. I could never understand Helena, the y=
oungest, moving to Budapest on her own where she would have possibly met Ka=
rl. It now makes more sense given this story that the marriage was arranged=
if this was common practice as written.

Subject: [Cz-L] Questions about arranged marriages
--------=3D_MB747714DF-89FE-44F3-BB72-9B99F9778C2E
Dear friends from Czernowitz,
I am Catherine Neykov from Paris France. I apologies in advance for my
mistakes in english and hope that I will get understood.
I am a small (but true) writer and after a two years break working on a
novel about violin, I have decided to try again to tell the (long and
sad) story of my family. I found new information on Jewishgen ad read
several books. Among them was the very well documented : =3DE2=3D80=3D9CLe =
crepus=3D
cule
des lieux=3DE2=3D80=3D9D of Florence Haymann, member of the group.
She writes that arranged marriages used to happen between bucovian boys
and galician girls. More precisely, she says that the intermediaries,
used to get those girls to come from Galicia to Czernowitz and get
married there.
Although my grandparents lived in Suceava, and not Czernowitz, I think
that it is what happened to my grandmother, Pessel Burta, because :
- In the family tree, my father just mentioned the name of one aunt, the
one also married in Suceava. But he wrote that the family include =3DE2=3D8=
0=3D9C=3D
12 or
13=3DE2=3D80=3D9D children. He did not know the names of the others. Exactl=
y as i=3D
f he
had never met them.
- The registers of Suceava on Jewishgen (or anywhere else) do not know
other Burta than my grandma and her sister. But it is always mentioned
about them : =3DE2=3D80=3D9Cparents from Rudnik Galicia=3DE2=3D80=3D9D and =
the first na=3D
mes of the
parents : Isak and Pearl.
- I find the name of the Burta family in registers of Rudnik nad Sanem
and its neighborhood.
[
Now, here are my questions :
- Does anybody know something about those arranged marriages of girls
that intermediaries were searching in Galicia ?
- Why so far (about 550 kilometers) ?
- Why did the girls accept to live so far from their families ? Were
they poor ?
- Who was paying the intermediary ?
I thank you very much in advance for the help you can provide and whish
you a good end of summer.
Best regards
Catherine Neykov
