Dear Catherine,
I would be very sparing with the assumed arranged marriage. Within the austro-hunarian monarchy marriages crossing todays borders were quite ordinary - and not depending on regions and/or religion. Galician-bukovinian marriages are nothing extraordinary, especially in financially good situated families.
Without an explicit indication, I would not beliefe in an arranged marriage. Maybe familyfinder has the digitized files online? Czernowitz is online, for Suczawa I didn’t look.
Of course Schadchen and as well white slavery existed (otherwise the ‚Liga gegen Mädchenhandel‘ would not had a chapter in Czernowitz), but this was afaik exception rather than rule.
Welcome to the group!
Greetings from Vienna, Benjamin
