Dana:
This sounds fascinating.
Regarding the concept of sabra, it of course means native-born Israelis,
but also implying certain values and habits associated with the new
state/culture (and definining itself negatively in contrast to other
traits or values).
A few books that could provide the more extensive discussion you need:
Amos Elon, Israelis: Founders and Sons (1971)
David Schoenbrun, Robert Szekely, Lucy Szekely, The New Israelis (1973)
Tom Segev, The First Israelis (1998)
(I have at least the first and possibly the second of these in my
office, could possibly copy a section for you)
There is also Oz Almog, Sabra: The Creation of the New Jew (2000), which
I have not yet read.
There is also this article from Israel Studies (July 2002)
Yael Zerubavel, "The 'Mythological Sabra' and Jewish Past: Trauma,
Memory, and Contested Identities"
