Czernowitzers...
Is Wendy Lower's book "Nazi Empire-Building and the Holocaust in Ukraine", available as Book of the Month, July 2019, at our Czernowitz Book Corner,

not relevant for us, since Romanian authorities were responsible for the Holocaust in Bukovina and Transnistria? As a matter of fact it's on-topic at all. When it comes to the Holocaust, Romania operated always in the shadow of Nazi Germany, as we learn i. a. from Wendy Lower:
"Hundreds of skilled Jewish laborers and thousands of POWs built the Nazi leaders’ secret bunkers, and then were killed as a 'security precaution' in the first half of 1942. When General Commissar Klemm claimed that his territory was 'judenfrei' in June 1942, this was not actually the case. Members of the commissariat apparatus along with Himmler and Hitler’s special security forces conducted some of the most aggressive manhunts against Jews. Yet they also continued to bring in Jews from Transnistria, Hungary, and other parts of Ukraine to build a new thruway system. Ultimately, however, the ideological consensus surrounding the 'Final Solution' proved stronger than the economic rationale for keeping Jewish laborers alive. Thus, from the Nazi standpoint, a male Jewish laborer might be economically useful, but he was always expendable."
