Hello Joel,

At the risk of repeating something you've already tried, you may want to
check for your GGF Sigmund with his mother's last name if you know it. Many
Jewish children were "assigned" their mother's last names in birth
registries since only "state" marriages were recognized, not Jewish ones.
This happened to numerous families in the area, mine included. They were
ashamed to be called by their mothers' last names in school, but many kids
had the same issue and at least they knew the reason.

Also, we found that my GGM, for example, went to friends in a different
village to have my GM, so birth records may be found in an adjoining area,
not where they actually lived and grew up. (My grandmother was born in
Galicia, but grew up in the Bukowina ) Maybe something this is true for your
GGF , as well? You might have to check Ukrainian records, in a case like
this. If he had siblings, have you been able to find their records? That
might indirectly lead you to the one you want.

Even birthdates might be different, as several family members fibbed to get
to the US. You'd be surprised! Do you have your GGF's ship manifest in
arriving to the US? It may indicate a helpful alternative date or town.

I did a test check in the Radautz database and there were 52 Grünberg
names. Most don't look close to your name, but I did notice that almost none
had German-sounding names like Sigmund, so I'm guessing that Jewish names
were used. Do you know Sigmund's Jewish name? Or his mother's or father's?

I think we might be getting a little off track because of the specificity of
U.S. records, leading us to think that they'll appear similarly in Europe.
This is rarely the case.

Without the Jewish name, I think the best way would be to use a database
that shows all births in Radautz for 1865 - 1870, and then surmise which is
your family member. You may at least find siblings, which could give some
further clues.

All the best,

Jane

Hello Emily,
Thank you for your kind letter. I have tried in this database without any
luck. I'm thinking that the birth record may be missing, lost, destroyed or
???
I am not having any luck.

Thanks for your thought.

Best,
Joel

Hi, Joel:

Since names may have been slightly different (likely with an umlaut over the
u in Grunberg, rather than Greenberg) and perhaps a slightly different first
name and date of birth, it would be good if you identified his parent's
names.

Have you checked JewishGen.org and Edgar Hauster's and Bruce Reisch's
"Searching the Radautz Jewish Births Index in One Step"?

Solca was close to Radautz and it is possible a birth record was recorded
there.

Subject: Help in locating birth records
Hello,
I am hoping to get some help finding birth records for my great grandfather:
SIGMUND GREENBERG. He was born May 10th, 1867, in Sulca, ROMANIA. Sigmund
was married to Bertha Abrams (Greenberg). She was born in Bucharest on
September 15th, 1880.
I have contacted the Romanian National Archives, local municipal agencies in
Sulca and searched through all Ancestry archives but thus far cannot locate
any birth records in Romania. I have a ton of U.S. government documentation
for GREENBERG showing his birth in Sulca, Romania.
I would be incredibly grateful if anyone can help me locate his birth
records.

Thank you,
Joel Levin
