Jordan
I read the first chapters of your grandfather’s autobiography and found it fascinating.
My maternal grandfather Geza Kanczuker was a year younger than your grandfather but wrote his autobiography in the same year as your grandfather. His parents were born in Czernowitz, and his father was also called Adolf.
My grandfather had a Hungarian first name because his father was also a manager of one of Baron Groedel’s timber mills, like your grandfather, but in Musa, Transylvania. My grandfather also saw Buffalo Bill’s circus’s when it visited Brasso, probably the same tour. He also mentioned seeing a plane as an attraction, although it didn’t fly.
My paternal grandfather Samuel Dukes, was born in Vienna but also went into a Hungarian army unit in WW1, as his parents were from Hungary. He couldn’t speak Hungarian. His was a communications unit.
His brother Sigi was also on the Piave front, in an Austrian unit, also reached Motta di Livenza ( very close to Venice) but I think it was later in 1918. He also said he spent much of his year in the war in trees (!)
Thanks for sharing this!

Regards
David Dukes

It includes his reminiscences, descriptions, and photographs of life in Czernowitz, as well as his later life in Vienna and New York.
