Hello Anita

Just in case you don’t know, Czernowitz was already part of Romania long before that time (soon after the 1st World War as part of “reparations” for Romania) and so it was not really an emigration to Bucharest, just a move.

In the early 1930s my mother left Czernowitz as a young woman as she married a lawyer who practiced in Bucharest, and the town was seen as “the place to be”. Later under the Nazis it was also safer for the Jews in Bucharest than in other parts of Romania. My parents both survived the war in Bucharest as did my uncle and grandmother who joined them towards the end of the war.

Hope that helps

Karin

Subject: [czernowitz-l] Emigration lists

I am looking for information about when my mother's family (Stern, Steren, Mandeli) may have emigrated from Czernowitz to Bucharest. I know they lived in Czernowitz in 1936 and even into the early 40's. I know there was widespread emigration from Czernowitz to Romania in 1940, 41-42, 44, 45-46. Are there any lists or other records available that might help me discover when they left?

Also are there lists of the people who received waivers from deportation from Traian Popovici or Corneliu Calotescu?

Thank you,
Anita Greenbaum-Brush
