--- Moses Barbasch has died A respected citizen of the city has passed away: Moses Barbasch. The deceased worked at the grain exchange for many years and his work was characterized by an embarrassing correctness and straightforwardness of commercial view. Moses Barbasch was able to pave his way to the forefront of our merchant community with these qualities. However, his nature was not only expressed in the commercial sphere, but also in other areas, where less the stock exchange in its conceptual variations and more the soul, the spirit sought satisfaction. Moses Barbasch had a great sense for knowledge and education and especially for that knowledge which is related to religion. He professed Jewish Orthodoxy and, within the framework of the Zionist movement, the Misrachi, the Orthodox wing in Zionism. During the period of his membership in the Council of the Jewish Community, he shifted the focus of his activity to advocating the justified demands of the Jewish Orthodox circles of the city. He knew how to present his views convincingly and thus to win friends for Orthodoxy even in other camps. The Jewish community mourns the loss of a valuable person through the passing of Moses Barbasch, equally valuable for the stock exchange and, in a broader context, the merchant community of the city a leading member. The attendance at the funeral of Moses Barbasch showed how much this loss is mourned by wide strata of the population. On Thursday, at half past four in the afternoon, a large mourning congregation gathered in front of the deceased's house in Strada Logotetti Popovici to pay their last respects. Among others, the president of the Zionist National Organization Dr. Mayer Ebner, Chief Rabbi Dr. Mark, Rabbi Rath, the vice-president of the Jewish community Dr. Weinstein and the heads Littmann Schaffer and Elias Grill, bank director Schwarz, the vice-president of the Stock Exchange Roll with the secretary Dr. Grossariu, veterinary inspector Iliescu, the president of the "Joint" Karl Klüger with director Aba Soifer, the president of the association Talmud Torah Josef Greif with vice-president Gabriel Sokal, the president of the association of the apprentices’ home Jacob Peretz, the President of the Association Machsike Sabath Isak Einhorn, merchant Elias Luft, the President of the Support Association for Widows and Orphans at the Stock Exchange Max Held, the President of the Association "Ort" Dr. Max Diamant, Rabbi Baruch Hager, Director Lippa Horowitz, Nathan Boral, Cafetier Sorodoc, Professor Dr. Max Barbasch, merchants Adolf Heitner and Mendel Harnik and many others. At the open grave, Chief Rabbi Dr. Mark spoke on behalf of the Jewish community, the "Misrachi" and the friends of the deceased, Rabbi Rath, Mr. Gabriel Sokal and Mr. Max Held, who paid tribute to the personality of the deceased in moving words." --- Edgar Hauster [MacBook] ________________________________________ From: bounce-126978231-8322570_at_list.cornell.edu <bounce-126978231-8322570_at_list.cornell.edu> on behalf of Milton Koch <mjk1944_at_gmail.com> Sent: Monday, November 21, 2022 20:20 To: Czernowitz Discussion Group Subject: [czernowitz-l] searching Moshe/Moses Barbasch from Czernowitz Hello all- I have been doing research about family members from Czernowitz. I learned from a distant cousin that MOSCHE/MOSES BARBASCH, who was my great-uncle, was involved with starting one of the synagogues in Czernowitz some time in the early 1920’s. He is buried in the Czernowitz cemetery, on April 13, 1939. I am hoping that there might be some records available in the Jewish community and one of the synagogues/organizations, that might have this information. I would like to know if this information is correct or not, exists and/or where I can find out more. Many thanks, Milton Koch ******************************************************************************* This moderated discussion group is for information exchange on the subject of Czernowitz and Sadagora Jewish History and Genealogy.
