A WATSUP from Ekaterina Simonova
SVIT Volunteer, Ukraine’s annual ‘workcamp’ to clean the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) (2010)
After the ‘workcamp’ Katja remained in Czernowitz and cleaned by herself area 25 of the Jewish Cemetery and found my grandfathers head-stone. Ever since we have been friends. We invited her 3 times to Tel Aviv, we also helped her financially several times as well as now.
Katja, is in Mariupol with her 2 children, her sister her son and her mother. They have been hiding in a cellar for the last 7 days.
Dear Arthur
The city of Mariupol is blocked now for the last 10 days, there is no way to escape, all roads are destroyed, from the east we have the Donetsk republik forces, from the west the Crimea forced, from south is the sea, and from the north the Russian forces who are shooting. Cities which are near, like Volnovaha, Sartana, Nikolske are destroying and are burning.
For last 7 days there is no electricity, heating (outside is -1), and no Wi-Fi, also no water for the last 4 days.
Yesterday it rained and we have got some rain water, gathered from the roof.
Once a day I go out to find some Wi-Fi and check the situation, to find water and buy some food if possible.
With food is also difficult. For the last 6 days there is no bread or flour. Last loaves of bread were sold for 130 Hryvna per loaf. Most of the markets are closed, and the open ones have just empty shelves. And the lines to this markets are about 100-150 people. But it is still possible to find some items. Prices are 3- 5 times up - 1 kg potato = 30 HRN. instead of 7 hrn. There is no petrol. If u need a taxi, it is 4000 HRN (140 US $)what is equal to a flight ticket.
Shelling has never stopped for the last week. But for the last 6 days heavy artillery shooting doesn't stop even for 15minutes rest, all around.
So far the Children are ok and safe.
Wish me HOPE.
Katja.
