<x-flowed>Dear Friends:
Yesterday, I posted an announcement about our group in the JewishGen,
Rom-Sig, and Ukraine Sig discussion groups. As a result, we have 19
new subscribers, and requests are continuing to come in. We are now
up to a total of 47 subscribers.
To our newest members - WELCOME! We encourage you to introduce
yourselves and describe for us your interest (and expertise?) in
Czernowitz. You can review the list of members by sending the
following line to listproc_at_cornell.edu:

Some of you have asked me about the existence of vital records for
the Jewish community of Czernowitz. I've posted on this before (and
you can look up the more detailed posts in the JewishGen discussion
group archives), but briefly, the Mormons are filming at the Oblast
Archives right now, and the project may take approximately 18 months
to complete. Included in this large filming project are 115 volumes
of Jewish records for Czernowitz for the period 1857-1940, plus one
volume from 1841. It's possible that records for other northern
Bukowina towns may also be included in this project, but details of
this sort are not available from the library in Salt Lake City. The
Miriam Weiner web site (http://www.rtrfoundation.org) seems to
indicate that Czernowitz records in that time frame are fairly
complete, though I'm doubtful.
A group of four of us have used a professional researcher living in
Chernivtsi with some success. His price is fair, and he's honest,
but he depends on the ability of the archivist at the Oblast Archives
to find and translate records. The archivist has limited abilities
in German, and the old style handwriting (and often poor penmanship)
makes it difficult. We can tell you more if you are interested in
further details. One has to consider whether to hire this researcher
now, or just wait for the records to become available via LDS
libraries.
