<x-flowed>Congratulations to our list member Alti Rodal on the publication of
her article "Bukovina Cemeteries, Archives, and Oral Histories" in
the current issue of Avotaynu XVIII Number 3, Fall 2002, pages 9-15.
Some of us were able to hear Alti's talk at the meeting in Toronto
this summer, and it is terrific to see her comprehensive article
appear in print. Alti describes not only the archival resources
available in northern Bukovina, but also the huge project to
digitally photograph all existing tombstones (more than 50,000) in
the Czernowitz cemetery. This project was spearheaded by the Jewish
Genealogical Society of Ottawa, Canada, working with Mr. George
Bolotenko of the National Archives of Canada. In her article, Alti
also describes her very emotional trip to surrounding villages, and
what she learned from the older residents who remember the days prior
to WWII.
David M. Fox also has a short article in the same issue (pages
17-18), entitled Records from Northern Bukovina. He describes with
more detail some of the Czernowitz records in Fond 325 at the
Chernivtsi Oblast Archives. These records, which hopefully include
some records from nearby shtetls, are "next in line", as of September
2002, in the ongoing Mormon microfilming project at the Oblast
Archives.
