Czernowitzers:

I guess what I should have said in my last post
is that if http://czernowitz.dnsalias.org doesn't
work for you at any time; try
http://czernowitz.dnsalias.org:81 which is the clone
of the server.

The reason the main server is down is that I'm doing
some scanning, and the server machine is also the
machine with the scanner. The scanner runs
under Windows, but the server runs under the Linux
operating system. So, it's one or the other <g>.

I'm trying to scan the hard copy of the 1941 German
military street map which Bruce sent me as four
11x17 sheets. It's a very excellent map and all the
street names are legible, but it's also very large.
This means it must be scanned in sections and then
re-assembled. It's trickier than I expected to get
the pieces lined up properly.

The low resolution version of the map is already in
the maps section on the website. It's called
1941stadtplan.gif, and it's the first map displayed.

The plan is to post the hi-rez version in four (jpeg)
sections which you will be able to download from the
website. Each section looks like it will be between one
and two megabytes. You should be able to print it in
parts and paste the whole thing together.

If things work out, I will dump the 1200 dpi bitmapped
scans to a CDROM, which I will make available to anyone
who wants to try and put the map together from the
original scans themselves. As well, I plan to assemble
the whole map on the CD.

Sorry for being so long winded, but I was so impressed
with the map that I thought I would share it with you.

Best,
jerome
