Greetings again Czernowitzers!
The large sized 1941 street map of Czernowitz
is now available on the C'z website in the
maps section. It is the equivalent of 45"x45",
and is in jpeg format. The file is large, about
1.7 megabytes, so it will take a while to load.
It is indexed, and shows such features as the
Jewish cemetery, the synagogue, various hospitals,
and many many street names. It is quite legible the
way it is. The street names are in Romanian.
This is the 7th incarnation of my original effort
of trying to align the pieces properly -- I think
it's pretty good now, but certainly not perfect.
You should be able to copy the jpeg by saving
the image with your browser. I suppose you should
be able to print it out in sections, but I haven't
tried that.
If anyone is interested in higher resolution
images, I have made a CD which contains the original
bitmapped scans (at 600 dpi); the scans converted to hi
resolution (low compression) jpegs; a composite map
and index as a .gif file; three composite maps (jpeg's)
with differing amounts of compression; and the original
.PSD file (photoshop format).
If you do think you'd like the CD, please send me an
e-mail with your name and full postal address (printed).
I'll mail you the CD with a note about how much the
postage, media, and the cd-mailer was.
Anyway, if you check the wbsite's maps section, the map is
called '1941stadtplan_large.jpg'. It is the smallest
sized, lowest resolution image on the CD.
Let me know if you have trouble copying the image. It should
go ok from a high speed connexion. I'd be interested to know
how you make out.
Best,
jerome
