Greetings Czernowitzers!
The following is new on http://czernowitz.dnsalias.org
1. Simon Kreindler has updated Spreadsheet #1, and as before
there is a 'viewable' version in html format that you can see
with your browser as well as the original excel spreadsheet. It's
in the 'Downloads' section.
2. Lilian Madfes has sent a cover sheet from a Machzur (Machzor)
printed by an ancestor in 1848!! Neither she nor I can read
Hebrew, and she was wondering if there is any mention of
Czernowitz in the Hebrew text on the cover page. You can have a
look at this beautiful page at:
http://czernowitz.dnsalias.org/lilian
Just click on the filename. If you need higher resolution and
larger copy, I can mail it to you. This page will be moved
eventually to the photos section. BTW, Lilian's surname means
'printer' in Hebrew I am given to understand.
3. The table containing information of mass graves and monuments
that I did such a miserable job on has been fixed AND nine
photographs of monuments in the Czernowitz area have been linked
to the table. Thanks again to Natasha in Czernowitz. It's at
http://czernowitz.dnsalias.org/mempages/natasha/memory.html As
well Natasha sent a lovely watercolour (I think it's a
watercolour) done by Natalia Yarmolchuk, of the Turkish Bridge in
Czernowitz. If you go to Natasha's page you can click on
turkbridge2.jpg. Also, you will find a URL that has a gallery of
Ms Yarmolchuk's work -- very nice indeed. Oh yes... can someone
tell me where the Turkish Bridge is located in the city, and why
is it called that? I tried google, but came up empty.
Today the website received it's 5,000th visitor since April of
2003. That number excludes visits by the code red worm (still
about ten per day), and other malicious visitors. I probably
account for 5%, due to having made it my 'home page', and that if
I'm working on the site, I check the changes from a number of
different types of machines. Still, it's far more than I ever
expected.
Keep the info coming in for Spreadsheet #1 to
simonkreindler_at_sympatico.ca (relates list member's surnames of
interest to street addresses in Czernowitz area) and also
Spreadsheet #2 information to a_guy_at_canada.com (relates list
members to surnames they are researching).
Best regards,
jerome
