A ship is going through the Pacific Ocean and passes by a little island.
They see someone signaling.
They stop and send a boat ashore to see whats wrong.
They find a man who has been ship wrecked for a number of years and are
amazed at how he survived on this little island in the middle of nowhere!
In looking around, they see 2 huts.
"What are these they ask?"
"Well, that shack there is my shul." he answers.
And what is the other hut?
"Oh that? Thats the Other shul. I would NEVER set foot in there...!!"
:)
I for one, want to thank Bruce for the brilliant idea of introducing some
"back and forth" to this list. In truth, it is a bit too quiet and I am
sure we (all) needed (enjoyed) the excitement of the moment!
Bruce, you are so clever!
Now, I have 5 lists, and halevay, we should have such a good topic to
really
wake everyone up!!
Great! Beautiful!!
I am recommending this list to all my friends!
All seriousness aside, we look back on Chernowitz and think it was all a
very ordered, neat existance and in our rose colored glasses, we forget
that people are people and just as our relatives fought it out in shuls
and threw tomatoes at each other in the market, so too we, their progeny,
are walking in their footsteps!!
While we are on the subject, my great aunt Sylvia Reifler has an
interesting custom.
When she goes to throw a piece of bread out, she wraps it up and gives it
a kiss.
She was born in Chernowitz. (her mother was a Dauber)
Plus, I am wondering if all Chernowitzers are "Yekish"?
I am not going to start in with jokes about Yeckies, but I have observed
in this part of the family, a very definate "on time" and scheduled life.
Is this a Chernowitz thing?
I know the borders went back and forth at different times, so sometimes
it was Austria and others Romania.
