My mother says my Czernowitz grandmother also kissed bread before throwing it away, saying it was because bread was the staff of life and therefore shouldn't be thrown away. I guess the kiss was to "undo" the sin. My mother still carries on the tradition although this is the first I've heard of it. My grandmother also wouldn't let my mother walk around in stockings (another superstition that my mother thinks is related to not bringing death into the house). Also my grandmother learned to tell Tarot cards from a gypsy from Czernowitz. She was quite serious about it; she taught me a little of this. Ellen
