I find I must chime in as well. Over the past six months, as I've been
planning my trip this July to Czernowitz, I have developed a real
relationship with what until recently only were names and references I'd
remember hearing my father (born Kolomayja 1898, then grew up in
Czernowitz: Joshua Kern, nicknamed "Junio") make to his childhood.

This list is enlivened by the willingness of members to share memories,
longings, pain and joys (and yes, recipes!), and the ability to capture
the wonderful nuances and details of day to day life in long-ago
Czernowitz. I have heard terms and references I didn't even know I knew
until I heard them here and suddenly I thought, Yes, my Dad talked about
that!! Imagine, I say to myself, thanks to this list, I can visit the
graves in Czernowitz of members of my family (I hope to find) who have
not had someone visit them in almost 100 years.

I'd like also to say I very much appreciate how far-flung this list serv
is, with members all over the world. What a great thing that, through
this technology, we can connect with our recent and/or historic pasts,
re-create context and history, tell stories, keep the spirits of those
whom we love and miss alive, and visit the age of Emperor Franz Joseph
thanks to the digital Age.
One thing I'd enjoy sometime is to hear from people soon how they ended
up where they are - from Israel and France to England, Australia, etc.
All from that little shetl Czernowitz.

Nina
