Caliceanca was (maybe still is) a lovely wooded green suburb of
Czernowitz. One of my friends had her grandparents living there on a
wonderful farm with cattle and chicken and fruit trees. We were only 11 or
12 years old when we walked - really walked - from Czernowitz to Caliceanca
by foot, the walk for two small girls taking about 3/4 of an hour and being
full of lovely adventures on the way.

Caliceanca was rather a small rustic village than a suburb.Peasants lived
in cabins and attended to their livestock as well as to their soil. The
earth was so rich and fertile, everything grew without much effort.

I myself am booked for an organized tour of Rumania the end of July which
regrettably does not include the Bucovina. Although I have done this before,
I am still looking forward to this trip very much. Rumania's beauty equals
the ones of Switzerland - even surpasses it in my opinion, but has something
which Switzerland lacks, and this is a certain warmth, very friendly people,
evenings of folklore with wonderful gypsy music, wine and dancing.
Although my real roots will always lie in Czernowitz, I am still bound to
Rumania, its unique sites like Poiana Brasov, Sinaia, Cheile Bicazului - if
these names mean something to you, and not less to its feisty language,
humor, joy of life, although God knows they still don't have it so good!
   Sorry for my lengthy comments,
   Lucca
