Dear All:
I have followed the e mail correspondence of the group from very early
on although I have seldom contributed to the discussion.
I have never been to Czernowitz but have always wanted to. When the
suggestion of a Reunion was first raised, my immediate reaction was
"What a great idea!" My mother was born in Czernowitz and my father also
grew up there (although he was born in Ocna - about 20 miles north).
Being able to travel to Czernowitz with a group of landsmen, some of
whom know the city intimately, seemed like an extraordinary,
one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I immediately decided I would not miss
the opportunity for anything. I eagerly look forward to meeting those of
you who will also make the trip and finally attaching faces to your many
names.
I personally happen to be interested in seeing Czernowitz and its
surroundings. However, I recognize that others in the group have
different interests and may want to visit other cities first. Surely
this does not need to be a reason for dissension.
In response to Mimi's recent e mail, the tentative dates June 2 - 9 are
fine with me. However, never having travelled to Ukraine before, I would
very much appreciate help with planning the trip - making hotel
reservations, arrangements to tour Czernowitz and visiting my father's
shtetl etc.
What I am hoping will be possible is for someone (or perhaps as Mimi
suggests, a committee) who is familiar with the city, is experienced
with getting there from the West (in my case, from Canada), who speaks
the language(s), knows the best ways of getting around the countryside,
is familiar with local customs, etc. Luba German appears to be one
possibility but I am certainly open to other options.
Best regards,
Simon Kreindler
