Mimi,
Thank you for offering your thoughts about the Czernowitz (CZ) reunion.
I was born in Cz in 1931. My parents whisked me to the states within months
of my birth. Apparently traveling from NY to Palestine in 1934 we stopped in
Cz to visit with my grandparents. For the next 4 summers , 1935, 1936, 1937,
1938 my mother and I spent the summer in Czernowitz. I have vivid memories.
In 1996 my cousins and I visited Cz. All of them were born post WWII so all
they heard were stories from their mothers. In 1996 I was able to guide from
my grandfather's house to the synagogue, that he helped form. It was the
only synagogue in Cz.
1) When would you like the reunion to be and for how long? I think the June
1-10 will be good. However, June 1 is Erev Shavuot and Friday and Saturday
are Shavuot. Observant travelers may not wish to participate.
please give first and second choice dates. Maybe the following week
the 9th to the 16th.
2) Are you interested in group travel arrangements to the reunion? It would
help to have a group travel, to work with a travel planner .
From where? In my opinion we should all meet in Kiev or Lviv, get
acquainted and travel by bus i=or train to czernowitz..
3) Are you interested in group accommodation (hotel) arrangements? Yes!
4) What collective tours, visits, lectures or other activities would you
Like the group to plan? I think that we should plan organized tour of
Czernowitz where the old timers, those with near adult memories will compare
and contrast what we see and visit.
I recommend and at the end of the tour we meet and share our reflections on
what we saw and what we felt. I think we should break bread together and
develop our selves into a community of learners/travelers. I think that we
should meet with historians and political scientists and psychologists to
discuss what brings us together.
Warmly,
Jerry Lapides, Ph.D.
