Greetings Czernowitzers!
1. I would be interested in hearing from those list members who are using a
low speed dial-up (telephone+modem) connection to the internet. I'm trying
to ascertain how many users there are with this kind of system. As David
Glynn pointed out, large picture files (Ignacio Sternberg's postcard
collection for example), take a very long time to download if there are
three on a page as I had originally posted them.
To get around this, I've redone Ignacio's postcards with 'clickable'
thumbnails, so that if you have a dial-up connection, you can view them one
at a time. So, if you're using a dial-up let me know so I can get a count. I
can make things more accessible if need be.
2. Speaking of postcard collections, I've extracted David Glynn's high
resolution postcard scans from the general collection and posted them
separately with thumbnails. David very recently sent me four new scans that
are very nice: two of the Pilsner Beirhalle and one each of the Cafe Europa
and the Cafe Habsburg (interior).
3. Vlad Sinayuk sent me by post a set of 16 Czernowitz postcards from the
Soviet era. I've scanned these and tried to adjust for the somewhat faded
colours. They are posted as a separate collection. You will notice that the
file names are not descriptive of the subjects depicted. The descriptions on
the front of the cards were in the Russian alphabet and so I would like to
change the filenames to reflect the Russian street and place names. If you
view this collection and have knowledge of the Russian place names, please
e-mail me with the information, so I can change things appropriately.
All collections can be viewed by clicking on 'Czernowitz Postcards' in the
menu on the left side of the home page. Click on the collection of interest,
and then click on the thumbnails to enlarge them.
4. Barry Sturm has sent me high resolution scans of two letters written in
German which I've posted with thumbnails in the 'Help Identify/Find'
section. He would like some assistance translating the letters. His email
address is at the top of the page of thumbnails.
5. The Czernowitz FamilyFinder has been updated reflecting everything
that's been received to date. If you sent something to be posted and it's
not there now, it has gone astray, so send it to me again. If you're
wondering how to submit/change info on the Finder just send it (the
information) to me and I'll take care of it. It is NOT an automated system
that you can change from your computer like JewishGen's.
6. The website is located at: http://members.shaw.ca/czernowitz/
I wish you all a healthy and peaceful 2005!
Jerome
