Hi Neil:
Welcome to the group! My REISCH, BENDIT, KORNER and ENGLER families
came from Sadagora and the neighboring village of Rohozna.
Unfortunately, few pre-WWII records remain for this area, but there
are still some resources out there that can be helpful.
First of all - have you checked the Sadagura ShtetLinks web site?
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/sadgura/sadgura.html
Resources for Bukovina research are summarized at:
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/sadgura/ReischToronto.html
Our group web site for Czernowitz, just 3 miles / 5 km from Sadagora
and a place where many Sadagorans lived at one time or another, is at:
http://members.shaw.ca/czernowitz/
To find out more about your grandmother Sarah Stadler, have you tried
to find her ship passenger manifest? In 1920, these manifests
provided great amounts of information about parent names, towns of
birth, and last residence, etc. Did she arrive through Ellis Island?
If so, search via www.stevemorse.org. There is a Hannah STADLER
listed as arriving in 1921, daughter of Israel Stadler of Rohozna,
Romania. Could this Hannah be your Sarah? She was born in Poland,
but I can't read the town name.
There is a cemetery in Sadagora that could be a very useful source of
information for you. But it's not in great condition. All the
existing tombstones were digitally photographed by the Jewish
Genealogical Society of Ottawa, Canada. I project to index these
tombstones photos and post them to the JewishGen Online Worldwide
Burial Register is planned.
I hope this is helpful . . . for starters!
Best wishes,
Bruce Reisch
