Hello, all --

For a name, how about "Revisiting Czernowitz, Then and Now" -- or, "Coming
Together, in Czernowitz". For me this trip is not just about meeting one
another, so the term "reunion" is slightly incongruous and meaningless. The
journey is about revisiting our personal and shared histories, and coming
to terms with them in the present time, together.

1. Organized tour or walk of Czernowitz, with "old timers" comparing
>> the present and the past.
> Yes.
>>2. May 19, Evening - Kabbalat Shabbat service at the Synagogue
> Yes.
>>3. Social get-together in order that we get to know each other and
>> our connection to Czernowitz.
> Yes.
>>4. Walking tour of the Jewish section of town.
>
> Yes.
>>5. Discussion about Czernowitz Jewish identity.
>
> Yes.
>>6. Meeting with the current Jewish inhabitants of Chernivtsi.
>
> Yes.
>>7. Czernowitz walks in small groups of people who share a particular
>> interest. Some of these are: The theatre, the university, the
>> Herz-Jesu church and other churches.
>
> Yes. -- but here is where I'd like to find a way for people to locate
and visit specific addresses where our families lived. I'm sure I'm not
the only one with such a specific interest. So, some assistance in locating
these would be very much appreciated. If those others who also have
specific addresses in mind could "pool" our addresses, and if someone who
understood the streets of Czernowitz could help us to know which of our
addresses were within close range of one another, then perhaps we'd be able
to go in small groups to find our ancestral homes. That might require a
couple of local guides, but could be much more satisfying than simply
touring the city at large.

>
>>>8. A panel of survivors to be asked questions of their experiences
>>> and memories. Survivors presenting their testimonies.

> Yes.
>>9. A dinner with the Mayor and members of the local Jewish
>> community, a festival with music and entertainment, a wonderful
>> party.
>
> Yes
>>10. Visit with the participation of the Mayor and Dignitaries to the
>> Jewish cemetery and the monument to the 400 men shot by the
>> Germans when they entered Cernauti.
>
> No
>
>>>11. Visit to the Jewish cemetery and the monument to the 400 men
>>> shot in 1941, saying Kadish, WITHOUT INVITING THE MAYOR AND OR
>>> THE DIGNITARIES.
>>
> Yes
>
>>12. Meeting with the mayor and possibly his staff, to discuss our
>> concern over the state of the cemetery and it's possible
>> restoration.
>
> Yes. The larger our group, the greater would be the impact of our
concern and our desire for real follow-through.

>>13. Lectures by historians, political scientists and psychologists
>> about our shared interest and heritage.
>
> Yes
>>14. Lecture and discussion about the culture of Czernowitz in> different
> periods.
>
> Yes
>>15. Organized visit to the archives, (this may not be possible, they
>> may not allow entrance to large groups).
>
> Yes -- Perhaps the archives would allow us to enter in small groupings.
Are there local researchers who could be persuaded ahead of time to
actually research specific names for a reasonable fee, the results to be
provided during our visit? Just one surname per list member. We would have
to specify these names well in advance, of course. And the fee/rate would
have to be negotiated well in advance as well.

I know from personal experience that negotiating anything with the archives
is a tricky matter, but I presume the city does not get groups like ours as
a rule -- might not the mayor wish to help grease the wheels a bit as a way
of showing what a good place Czernowitz is to visit and thus encouraging
future tourist dollars? Is this a totally naive supposition?
>
>>16. "End of tour" meeting to reflect on what we saw and what we
>> felt.
> Yes.
>
> 17. Would other list members be interested in sharing in the cost of
> having a video made of some of these events which we could then
> purchase individually?

Yes. I think it would be a treasure for us and our descendents.
