Dear All,
I address this primarily to those of us who are seriously concerned about
the cemetery.
There has been much correspondence and discussion about this, in the context
of the proposed Reunion in May next year. Having followed this discussion
with interest, I would like to put forward my personal view, which is as
follows.
I think that the only way something will ever happen about the cemetery is
for someone, or a group of people, to take the lead. This means not only
gathering information, but also negotiating with various organisations - and
almost certainly fund raising - so as to come up with a definite, practical
and costed plan.
The person or the group who takes this on needs to focus upon the cemetery
as their primary interest. Hence I do not think it is appropriate for the
Reunion Committee, of which I am a member, to take the lead on this. The
Reunion itself occupies too much of our time for us to be able to assume a
primary role in connection with the cemetery. There needs to be a quite
separate group focussing on the issue of the cemetery. Those of us
travelling to the Reunion can act on behalf of that group when we are in
Czernowitz, and give them all possible assistance, e.g. by discussions with
the Mayor. But there needs to be a group devoted to and focussed on the
cemetery problem, and we are not that group.
Further, I feel that we should not expect too much from a meeting with the
Mayor if this means expecting the City Authorities to contribute financially
to the project. I am sure that money in the Ukraine is very tight, and we
cannot expect the cemetery to be high on the city's priority list.
Personally I feel that the only way that anything is going to be done for
the cemetery is for Czernowitzer / Bukowiner / Jewish organisations and
individuals to somehow raise the money. Then, there will be something to
talk about to the Mayor.
I hope that someone will take this on, and wish them all the very best.
Best regards,
David
