I hope I'm not repeating an earlier suggestion, but I've just discovered:

It is a searchable online library of Jewish family pictures and memories
from a project called Witness to a Jewish Century. This particular link is
to their listings for 101 Czernowitz family photos!

They are visiting elderly Jews, asking them to share family photographs and
stories. They are also inviting the public to submit their information, as
well.

You can search photos, documents, and memories by family name, city, or
country. I found quite a few small shtetls listed, and the countries are
worldwide.
