Dear Friends:

A few weeks ago, Irene Silfin asked me to post to the Czernowitz-L
the following short story about her 1995 visit to Sadagora. Sorry it
took so long, but here it is. She can be contacted at
<irene_at_silfin.net>.

All the very best,
Bruce

Sadagura, Ukraine is a suburb of Chernivtsi. When Minnie Rinsler,
Dad's mother, was born there in 1886, it was part of the
Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Her father, Koppel Rinsler, ran an inn.
There is an inn of the period in the Chernivtsi Ethnographic Museum.
The liquor was locked behind a wooden cage.

The cemetery was neglected, but not desecrated. Having the animals
graze keeps the weeds low and trees from growing. The Ohel of the
famous Sadagura Rabbis is on the cemetery grounds.

The synagogue was used as a mechanics' shop and is in deplorable
condition. The Rabbi's house was grand. It is now used as an office.

The registrar in the Chernivtsi Archive showed me the huge record
books of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. In them, written in German,
I read about the Rinsler family. I gave them money to copy and send
me records, but they sent very few.
