[Cz-L] timber industry

I'm aware that the timber industry was substantial in Romania and in the
south of what's now Ukraine. Anyone have any information on how it was
Jews came to be so active in this particular area? Was there something
peculiarly interesting - or manageable - for Jews to have taken this up?
