Hardy et al.

I would like to respond to Hardy's idea on the Temple.

I understand that the transformation of the Temple into a cinema took
place under the Russian occupation. It has always struck me as one of
the grossest post-war indignities to the Jews of Czernowitz, to have to
look at the Temple site and see but a garish cinema.

That cinema symbolizes to this day, the low regard in which our people
are held. That such a thing should continue, day after day, year after
year, until no-one remembers what stood on that ground is in itself
tragic.

As Hardy suggests, ideally the Temple should be rebuilt, but
practically, we know that will not happen. So, turning it into a little
green space park with a memorial would at least provide an enduring
reminder of our history in this city and the special meaning that this
little piece of earth has for us.

The cemetery decays because of time and benign neglect. The cinema is a
memorial to the low regard in which we are held. Could we explain that
to the Council? Would they consider changing that?

Best,
jerome
