Just to clarify: Raison does not assert in his book, The Haskalah Movement
In Russia, that the Jewish Diaspora in Europe is due soley to the expulsion
of Jews from Iberia and England, etc. or to any other single impetus.
Rather, he talks about influences within Jewish culture and practices
generally and among Jews influenced by the Haskalah movement specifically,
of their movement over time westward, then eastward, then westward, and
eastward, and so forth, according to the benevolence or the tyranny of any
given empire or ruler or society. The political climate, various
intellectual movements, the states of oppression that Jews found themselves
in - all together - it's a rich read.
