I would like to present the proposals and suggestions made by members of
this list about the program and content of the "Czernowitz and Bukowina
Reunion 2007".
I did so once before, on Aug. 30, but I this current message includes
some new suggestions and this time I will group the suggestions according
to subject.
A. Subjects for lectures, discussions and presentations:
1. New research about Czernowitz and Bukowina
2. What can and should be our contribution to the next generations
to preserve the heritage and the spirit of Czernowitz and Bukowina.
3. Presentation of a family history or one of the diaries of
Bukowinians sent to Transnistria like those found at Yad Vashem.
4. Review of the "Czernowitz Reunion 2006" meeting
5. Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery action plan
6. Possibility of organizing our collective artifacts into a permanent
Czernowitz and Bukowina museum exhibit
7. Talk and discussions about "What was Czernowitz and in particular
Jewish Czernowitz really like?"
8. What Czernowitz values, ideals and customs do we hope to preserve
and to hand down to future generations.
9. Most of the people who have shown an interest in participating in
this meeting, are those who either themselves or through their parent's
and grandparents were part of the Jewish, German speaking culture
and milieu of Czernowitz and the Bukowina. I think that the program
for the meeting should focus on this culture, the personal
reminiscences of those of us who were part of it and the traditions
associated with it which have been handed down to second and third
generations.
Suggestion #1 depends on finding research material, which has not yet been
published and which the person doing the research would be willing to
present at this meeting.
On this list suggestions #2 and number #8 are almost identical
and could be combined.
B. Suggestions for other activities than talks, discussions and
presentations:
1. Tours or organized excursions.
2. visit Teffen industrial park and the Museum for German Speaking Jewry
also museum "Lohamei Hagetaot" and sightseeing of the northern border
and the bombarded towns; visit Jerusalem and the Israel Museum with
its new model of ancient Jerusalem plus "Mini-Israel" in Latroun
3. Visit to Yad Vashem
4. Circles of participants meeting in small interest groups.
5. An evening of entertainment with Lya Koenig who knows so much about
Czernowitz and is best suited to make a light and memorable evening
out of her great experience. She can do sketches in Yiddish,
Czernowitz Yiddish and German and the universal language of mime.
6. Evening with Czernowitz actress Miriam Zohar.
7. meeting with Steff Wertheimer
8. Evening of Czernowitz anecdotes and jokes,
9. A joint meal of Czernowitz style food
10. Banquet
11. Helping those Czernowitz and Bukowina survivors
who would like to publish their memoirs.
12. Establishing contact with Bukowiner societies in Israel.
C. Suggestions about the official language of the meeting:
1. Normally, talking of Cz, we should hold the meeting in
Czernowitzer Deutsch but, as this is impossible, I suggest
we keep the English language, which is the one we use to
exchange mails on the Cz.-List.
2. Let's wait to decide the question of language until we know
who will participate in this meeting. There is also the possibility
of simultaneous translation and simultaneous meetings in different
languages.
D. Suggestions and remarks concerning other aspects of this meeting:
1. Open Space Technology is an effective and affective way to engage
100 to 250 people. (Ask Jerry Lapides to explain)
2. Participants should be sensitive to the sensitivities of others.
No disrespectful behavior of one participant to another participant
shall be allowed and no voting pro or against any position of any
other participant shall take place.
The agenda has to be clear before the meeting starts. Participants
must stick to it and should respect the decisions taken before the
meeting.
3. We should decide at the outset whether the meeting is a public
meeting, open to all, or a private meeting, open only to some.
In my opinion the meeting is intended for former Jewish Bukowiner,
their relatives, descendants and close friends, whether Jewish or not,
Czernowitzers, Bukowiners, or not. Only those which so qualify should
be admitted.
4. We should decide whether we want to invite paid speakers.
5. We should decide whether we want to employ, professional photographers
to videotape the discussions, talks and presentations.
In making this list, I have occasionally changed the language of the
original suggestions. I hope I have not changed the meaning. All who made
these suggestions, please fell free to add your remarks to this list and to
correct any of my mistakes.
I would like to suggest that anyone who has questions, opinions in support,
or against these suggestions, write to the list. We can take up to 10 days
to discuss these suggestions further, after which we will vote on which
suggestions we adopt as guidelines for the "Bukowina Reunion 2007".
Please in writing on this topic to the list, in the subject line of your
message write "proposals for meeting". In referring to any of the
suggestions mentioned here, please write the letter and the number under
which the particular suggestion is mentioned.
Best regards to all,
Mimi (Miriam Reifer Taylor)
