Greetings,
Believe it or not, I have begun in earnest yet another exhibition re towns
and cities in Europe. It is entitled "World Jewish Communities," or "WJC"
for short. It is meant to feature audiovisual material that relates to a
particular location, in this case, Czernowitz and Bukowina in general. Of
course, I am continuing to add material to my work-in-progress Czernowitz
exhibition you are already familiar with.
I have added to this WJC exhibiiton the first stage of a Czernowitz "virtual
city tour." This provides links to much of the material I have on my site
relating to a location (here Cz. and Bukowina) that don't fall within the
purview of my online Cz exhibition. This is not an actual tour of the city
itself (at least not yet :)), but it's just links to the material I have on
my site relating to Czernowitz--just as if you were visiting a "real" museum
and wished to take an audiovisual tour based on a oarticular artist or
theme, and had to trapse around the musuem physically while wearing some
kind of infrared hearing device and carrying around some sort of printed
guide....
In the case of Czernowitz, I make a distinction between my online exhibition
"Czernowitz: Town With a Jewish Past," and other material I have on my site
that relates to either Czernowitz or Bukowina in general, that exists
outside my larger Czernowitz online exhibition. So if you go to my "WJC
Czernowitz" page, you will see a link to my Cz online exhibititon, as well
as links to other material about Czernowitz. It's a work-in-progress, but if
you have ten or fifteeen minutes you might like to see what I've done.
You've already seen some of these pages, but not others. More will be added.
Of course I wish to add more personal anecdotes from you native Cz'ers,
perhaps even some audio clips, but this would require your participation. I
already have Dr. Scherzer's talk as part of this, and Hardy Mayer will also
be included....
A further explanation of my WJC exhibition and "virtual city tour" can be
read on the second page of WJC.
Sorry if my descriptions, etc., is a bit confusing. Perhaps if you read my
explanation on the second page of my WJC exhibition, it will be a bit
clearer.
The link is www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/wjc-czernowitz.htm.
On this second page you will find an anecdote from list member Gerhard
Schreiber about his grandparents' restaurant "Splendid" in Czernowitz. This
passage is about Pesach time, but I will publish the entire story within the
next week or two.........
To go from page 1 of WJC Czernowitz to page 2, just click on the link that
says "Enter the WJC Czernowitz exhibition here."
Questions:
Does anyone, by chance, remember the "Splendid" restaurant?
Does anyone have a video they've taken during a visit to Czernowitz? I know
no one has one of pre-war Czernowitz, but how about one taken in the last
few years? It doesn't necessarily have to be a video of any vestiges of
Jewish life there. I can always use a clip from the video as an adjunct to
my exhibition. You'd have to make a copy for me on DVD and send it to me by
regular mail. I could then extract out a video clip from it.
Lastly, my intro page to my overall "World Jewish Communities" exhibition
can be found at www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/wjc.htm .
Thanks and enjoy!
Best,
Steven Lasky
