Hardy,
You are one of the fine minds of this List.
You are a voice of reason.
You are a rock that many look to for guidance.
You are the encyclopedia Britannica of Bukovina.
You are a staunch and true Zionist.
In this situation, however, I beg to differ with you.
The issue here is about Lehachi Florentin's offer of assistance and the
manner in which Miriam Taylor responded to that offer. Lehachi is a
thoughtful, sensitive and caring member of this list.
I believe that is what Cora Schwartz was referring to in her 11/4/08 post to
the List and with which Henry Sinnreich and I agree.
You feel strongly that getting the Popovichi plaque put up in CZ is a way in
which to accomplish the honoring of the man, as well as providing CZ
residents and travelers to CZ, with an awareness of "Jews", Jewish history
and the atrocities committed against Jews, in the Bukovina and especially in
CZ.
You are a strong advocate of and deeply passionate about, Ukrainian
acknowledgement and recognition of Jewish history in CZ (especially the
Holocaust), including Jewish life and existence and the contributions that
the Jewish community has made to the history and development of that city.
You have rightfully railed many times against the possibility of the
Ukrainians choosing to deny history by deliberately excluding a Holocaust
exhibition display from the CZ Museum of History of the Jewish Community of
Bukovina
Yet, you would be willing to accept the Ukrainian dismissal of the Rumanian
history and existence in CZ, because it is more important not to rub the
City officials the wrong way and thereby possibly jeopardize the Popovichi
plaque project agenda, by including the "intervention" of a Rumanian in the
discussions with those City officials whose decisions reflect the Ukrainian
discord with Rumania,
In my opinion, this is hypocritical. I understand your concern about winning
the battle but losing the war. However, as Jews, we should be the first ones
to object to and not condone the kind of reasoning and behavior as displayed
by the City officials with regard to elimination of Rumanian wording on the
Popovichi plaque,
In your Post to the List of 9/21/2008 at 15:07 entitled "Re: [Cz-L] Gary
Rogovin The dishonouring of Popovici-the distortion of historical truth" you
made the following statement in your point number 3 "I don't give a hoot on
Czernowitz Rumanian History".
That statement may give insight into and reflect, a negative feeling on your
part when it comes to Rumania and all things Rumanian.
In order to have a fair discussion related to the point raised by Cora
Schwartz in her 11/4/08 post to the List, which by the way is simply her
expression of feeling as to the unfortunate choice of wording used to
dismiss Lehachi's offer of assistance and not a condemnation of Miriam
Taylor's concerns, personal feelings regarding Rumanians should not, in my
opinion, be a consideration..
